KARACHI: A major operation is planned today against encroachments in the streets of Karachi which will begin at 03:00 PM.
According to media reports, the director of Anti-encroachment has announced that the operation would cleanse the streets of Karachi from illegal vendors.
According to a rough estimate, there are 300,000 vendors in Karachi. Moreover, there are also reports that parking areas at the city centre are run entirely by parking mafias who charge at will.
In a meeting held at the Chief Minister House earlier this week, it was revealed that each vendor pays Rs 150 everyday to influential people including police officials and political workers.
Karachi has seen hundreds of similar operations since the last two years but vendors and parking mafias reemerge.
